Last post we looked at the concept of Leaders & Followers, this week we’ll talk about why being a creative entrepreneur may SLOW YOU DOWN in your quest to hit the big time in your home business.
I know a lot about this because I’m a really creative person. I’m the type of person who wakes up in the middle of the night with ‘an idea’ and has to write it down so I can act on it in the morning.
This is pretty common for entrepreneurs. You may be just starting out or wondering whether you should start your own home business and not even have discovered you are one yet!
If you have a yearning to be FREE and the voice in your head is telling you to find a way to leave your job cause you can’t stand being told what to do… odds are you are one!
So you are about to start a home business. Dada da da!
Here you go. You do your first training with your mentor and it all seems pretty simple. You get to it and start ‘letting people know’ you have just started a new business.
You invite the ones who show some interest to take a proper look. Some say ummm sounds interesting but it’s not for me.
Others say ‘my Dad’s cousin’s uncle’s brother lost all of his money in one of them things!’
Boo hoo. You call your mentor and with a little sob say, ‘I’ve spoken to EVERYONE and no one wants to do this.’
What you’re really meaning is (translation for newbie sponsors here) ‘please remind me why this is a good idea and why it can work for me PLEASE!’
So your mentor reminds you and tells you it is quite normal. Some will, some won’t – it’s okay just continue on. (Don’t take any shit I say to my guys – which makes them laugh and relieves the tension)
So they continue on contacting people on their list following the business plan that they must follow to learn the skills of how to do this business.
The problem is it’s kind of tough sometimes. It’s not that much fun hearing lots of no’s and you’ve only signed up one person so far who has gone on holiday to Wales.
Not much going on really. One night you wake up with an IDEA!
And off you go. You will recreate the system to suit you. Isn’t that what entrepreneurs are supposed to do, you think in your excitement?
Does this sound like you or someone you know? This is the entrepreneurial trap in Network Marketing, Direct Sales or any other business where the big money lies in the success of your team implementing a system.
Imagine if you own your company and you have a fantastic product. You have some very gifted people working for you and some of them have an artistic streak.
They start to make different products and some of them are AMAZING.
The only problem is it takes many weeks for them to create the products and no one else can make them just like them. Hmmmm you think.
This is an innovative product and I love the way John has made it look like that but if it takes John two weeks to make each one I’m going to be bankrupt by the end of year.
You get the picture? Even if you are a creative entrepreneur with employees you will still need to have a ‘SYSTEM’ or OPERATIONS MANUAL’ for your guys to work to.
Has the penny dropped? If you’ve ever worked in a big organisation you’ll know this to be true. You might not have realised just how much of a cog in the wheel you were but in the bank I worked at we had manuals for everything. (I’m not saying I followed them though!)
So how does this apply to your home business today?
You might not like what I’m going to say but what you do with it is up to you so just hear me out.
If your business has a proven plan in place you need to follow it. If it’s good enough for Robert Kiyosaki is it good enough for you?
Here’s what Robert says about Network Marketing,
‘The power of your business is in its scalability. A business that is scalable simply means a business that can operate on any scale. What gives your network marketing its real power is not what YOU can do; it’s what you can duplicate.’
So when you’re feeling extra creative do something creative that can help your business but don’t change the system!
Apply your oodles of creativity to other areas of your life. The wonderful thing about having a home business is that you get to choose when you work.
So next time you’re tempted to change everything because you know better why not get out your notebook and start writing that book or blog, or if you want to move your business forward get creative about meeting new people.
Take a class in your favourite language, creative writing or volunteer for a good cause and pour your creativity into fund raising.
The world needs your creativity and your special gifts so they will never go to waste!
When you have more money coming in than going out, whether you work or not, you’ll be able to invest more time into your creative projects so its a great vision to have.
To discover your Wealth Profile and find out how to get into flow as an entrepreneur you can take this test: Wealth Dynamics
Surprise, surprise, I’m a Creator! If you’re No. 8 maybe you’re the right person to go ahead and make the ‘duplicable system!’
I’d love to get your feedback on this so please leave your comments below. If you’d like to receive regular articles, updates and goodies from me please join my e-zine list on the top right of this blog.

Great post as always and I agree with most of it. As RG says 'it doesn't matter what works. it only matters that it duplicates.' However it is also sometimes good to have fun thinking outside of the box and trying out new ideas occasionally to see if that might be the next best thing that easily duplicates. Mahalo Jon

Hi Jon yes I'm all for that once people have mastered the basics. I was talking to newbies who want to skip the system and invent their own before they even understand the business

Hey Rachel. Great Post. I'm the same type as you and I have tried SO many times to come up with a better way to build a business, but to no avail. Now I'm trying really hard to stick to the system! lol
