Can Anyone Become an Expert?

This week one of my Facebook followers observed that anyone can become an expert with the amount of information available on the internet.

And of course this is true. Anyone can immerse themselves in information, learn it parrot fashion and pose as an expert.

Although success minded people usually prefer to pay to have the information given to them in a format which saves them days of trawling round the internet trying to fish out the good from the crap.

Ironically the reverse is also true …

We are surrounded by bona-fide experts who have worked in their field for years and know their topic inside out.

But and this is a big BUT – without the confidence to move forward beyond trading hours of their life for dollars they are not able to truly leverage their expertise.

There’s a voice in their head that says, ‘Who am I to be an expert?’

Many lack the marketing knowledge to learn how to position themselves as experts so that they can serve more people in more effective ways.

And here’s the kicker.

Some simply won’t focus to learn.

The knowledge doesn’t just land in your head!

Just because you’re an expert in dog photography ( very niche) does not mean you know how to package up all your good stuff to avoid the time trap of taking photos all day long.

If you love your work well I guess it’s cool.

But there will come a time when you want (or need) to work less … but still desire to earn the same money you make now.

All experts will tell you that this involves study and discipline.

It may involve learning about the new rules and tools of the internet to get your message out there in a big way.

Some of it is confusing yes.

I won’t lie. It may make your head hurt.

I mean seriously!

But those who are impatient and resistant to learning won’t keep up.

They can jump up and down and complain about how things they are a changin …

About this twitter and facebook nonsense.

Or about the greedy government.

About no time for blogging …

So they’ll be trampled under the cyber foot.

But when all is said and done if you’re passionate about your work, it’s your duty to get your message out there.

It’s not even about the money.

Although some will use that as an excuse not to do it, ‘I’m not motivated by money etc.’

You don’t need to be.

Be motivated by your desire to help more people.

And if you are motivated by money you can earn it much more easily by having a business model that transcends the hourly work model.

How about getting paid every minute or at least every day?

Think about it.

It’s not greedy but it is effective.

Money is just a measure of how valuable your contribution is to the market place.

The old models are dying a slow and painful death as you can see all around you.

Just watch the news and those cheery peeps will fill you in if you don’t know what I mean.

We all have a unique message. What’s yours?

And I’ll leave you with these words from the great Steve Jobs who died last Wednesday:

‘And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don’t settle.’
