Do you ever feel like a misfit?

I’ve been thinking about this quite a bit lately and wanted to share this with you.

The more I up my game and challenge the norms of traditional business people, friends & family, the less I fit in.

The chances are that if you’re stepping up, dreaming big, talking large and taking action it won’t be long before your friends, family and colleagues start to look at you like you just fell off the moon.

If you don’t know my story I literally stumbled into the home based business industry back in 2002. I went on the old dial up internet and typed in ‘work from home.’

It was that simple – that was my dream. It wasn’t a huge dream back then but it was big enough to make people I knew feel uncomfortable.

One of my friends actually said to me, ‘why don’t you get a real job?’

In my former life I’d been an investment funds dealer and then an administrator at The British Council.

I was easy to label and pigeon hole. ‘She’s a nice girl, young mother, responsible employee.’

And if there’s one thing I’ve learned it’s that people LOVE to label you. It makes them feel safe.

The minute you challenge that idea they have of you, they either worry about you and beseech you to take care and not to take risks. (These are the good ones who love you and care for you) OR

They secretly FEAR that you are leaving them behind and they begin to feel insecure because if you can go after your dreams what excuse do they have?

And on it goes …

The business I got into was network marketing which is a much maligned and misunderstood but incredible business model.  Because we help people change their THINKING before they change their pay check and circumstances, I got used to bumping up against the dream-stealers in my team members’ lives.

Now moving on almost 9 years and I’ve considerably added to my skill-set.  I’m a pretty good copywriter, about to be a published author and have created an online brand around what I love to do – helping people escape those dreaded labels.

You’d think my friends and family might be happy about that right?

Well some of them are to be sure. But more of them just don’t get it and probably never will.

I know people who earn $100k per month and their mums still say ‘can’t you get a proper job?’

So if you’re feeling like a misfit because you’re daring to defy the ‘herd’ message of ‘get a good job and don’t take risks,’ please don’t let that stop you moving forward.

Dare to be different, dare to stand up for what you believe in and dare to make a difference by sharing your unique gifts with the world.

It’s misfits like us that change the world.

In the comments below, tell me your specific experience of feeling like a misfit and challenging the norms.

Do you know any entrepreneurial misfits or big dreamers who don’t fit in?

Did you ever feel like a misfit and if so how did you handle that?

If you found this valuable please share it on Facebook or Twitter.

Thanks for reading and spending a few precious minutes with me today.

X Rachel

First of all, I like this format better: short email broadcast to blog link. Less is more as they say. As for the blog post, I don’t feel like a misfit at all. I’ve accepted me as being different and unique many years ago and embraced it. In fact, my uniqueness is part of my power. People don’t forget me because I stand in my power, fearlessly and with joy. If you feel like a misfit, it’s just the inner voice of fear talking you out of owning who you really are. Tell it, “Thank you for sharing, now shut up.” And get on with it…

Lol yes Charlene – quite! I’ve always been different from my friends and over the years I’ve grown used to it – now as you say I embrace it & have a lot of different friends who are in the same business etc. I know it can be tough for those who haven’t come to terms with it yet though. Thanks for your feedback on the ezine :)
