Are you doing it anyway, or just feeling the fear?
I was thinking about this yesterday as I was working on my new project and feeling a bit challenged.
All in all it’s going very well but creating all my new marketing materials, system and marketing funnel is keeping me on my toes! It’s a huge project and much of the stuff I’m creating is much more complex than anything I’ve done before.
On the whole I’m in the right space to do it. I’m feeling very inspired and creative and I know what I want.
But sometimes; usually when you can’t get something technical to work or you get stuck in the mud trying to figure out details it can be scary.
You might find yourself asking questions like, ‘Why am I doing this?’
‘Why did I start this – it’s such a BIG project?’ or saying things like
‘Maybe I should just go back to doing what I did before. I mean it was going quite well – I can just play it safe.’
Does that sound familiar to you?
That’s the point where your team members get cold feet, quit the programme or come out in night sweats at the thought of hosting a presentation.
If you’re a solo entrepreneur, maybe it’s the point where you decide to join a new coaching programme and play much BIGGER than you ever have before.
Breaking through your comfort zone can be really scary and most people just never do it for long.
I’ve certainly asked myself those things over the years I’ve been in business. What I’m getting at is that I don’t think it ever goes away.
There are things I do now without batting an eyelid, such as following up with prospects and enrolling people in my programmes over the phone; that for some would be just too scary.
That’s because the ‘scary thing’ is new to them and completely out of their comfort zone.
Once you do it a few times, the fear diminishes. When you do it many times you build your confidence, and by the time you’ve done it more times than you can remember you are becoming a pro.
But we all need to grow and go for new things too. If you have new projects you want to launch but you never quite get round to it, it could be that fear is holding you back.
The great and happy news is that in all the ‘scary things’ I’ve done over the years; I’ve never yet done something out of my comfort zone and not felt a thrill of achievement later.
Even if you do it badly, it is better to do it and get started.
Don’t wait for everything to be perfect. It never will be and to get better you have to begin and to practice.
Whether your big fear is speaking on stage, or writing or presenting or even dancing … whatever it may be for you; if it’s something you secretly feel the urge to do, then go for it.
Don’t let fear hold you back. It will grind you down and you will regret it because the biggest personal growth comes from facing you fear head on and laughing right in its face!
Once you have spoken on stage in front of thousands or even hundreds, what more is there to fear? That was the fear I overcame when I first got started in Network Marketing. Looking back I think facing up to that and doing something I was really afraid to do, helped me overcome many other fears.
What is it for you?
What’s holding you back from reaching your potential and living a no limits life?
Have a little think and challenge yourself to make 2011 your year where you overcome your biggest fear. A caveat here is that personally I don’t think it’s worth the effort of overcoming a big fear unless it’s something you really would like to do.
For instance I’m sickly scared of the idea of deep sea diving, but I have no plans to do it any time soon! No desire whatsoever.
Public speaking however was something that I always wished I could do, so you see the difference.
What is it for you?
I am doing it. You can do it too.

Hi Rachel,
That is the only way to deal with fear. It is not only the fear but also the high energy required to move out of the comfort zone because the change we are going to make is uncertain. But if we have to grow we have to deal with it. No shortcut to success. It’s just taking action and that too massive. Great Post!
