Happy weekend to you!
I’ve been thinking about price positioning of MLM business opportunities and products, in this ‘new’ economy.
I have had several conversations with new distributors lately who voiced concerns about the cost of their various business opportunities and whether they are able to build a business during this time.
Here’s a story for you about when I first got started in Network Marketing, with my first company, several years ago, and I voiced the same concerns. My sponsor, (who is an awesome super star!) put me straight as follows:
He said something like this, ‘you can lose weight and get the best nutrition on the planet into your body twice a day for the price of a happy meal!’
What’s important about that? Well it woke me up! I mean I knew the products were excellent and I was receiving great benefits myself, as were my customers but still I was a little fearful of the price.
The difference was that he had the perspective of time to know that when you have an excellent product that has already proven to be a winner, people will buy it from whoever is selling it with the correct price positioning, even if it is ‘expensive.’
If someone said, ‘it’s expensive,’ you could say ‘compared to what?’ And how true is that? I mean people pay so much more for their unhealthy habits than they do for their healthy ones!
The interesting thing is that new distributors will worry about the pricing even if the economy is booming because they have nothing to compare their business or product to. Help them with that.
So my point here is that it is a matter of personal choice. Unless you’re selling Lamborghinis to Eskimos you probably have a very good chance of doing just as well and probably better in this economy.
It will depend on a couple of things though as follows:
Do you believe your product or business is truly valuable? If you believe that and have some basic training about how to position your offer in the marketplace, like in the aforementioned example, nothing can stop you. (Unless of course you don’t do enough offering!)
Your mindset. If you are allowing yourself to be influenced by the news, and the regular jobnicks who are likely to be spreading the doom and gloom message of recession you will quickly be so depressed you’ll be unable to be the agent of change that we need you to be in this economy. Big tip: Turn off the T.V!
Your posture. Magical internet attraction marketing or not… the day will come when you are speaking to your real life prospects on the phone and they will ask you about the costs to get involved. If you are apologetic and think they are doing you a favour to join then no amount of lead generation will build your business for you.
Of course there are some things to bear in mind and you might want to ask yourself the following questions:
1) Is your business primarily focussed around retail?
If so my advice would be to change your focus to recruiting! This is a time when people are looking to make money, not to spend money for the sake of it.
Is your product a non consumable or luxury item? I won’t name specifics here but the key is to have a product that people get bonded with and need to re-order every month. When there is a recession people go into a lack mindset and even if they are unaffected by the situation themselves economically, they may still feel a sense of guilt when buying something they don’t really ‘need.’
This is not the case if they are bonded with their product and need to use a certain amount to be active in their business. (2 reasons to invest in themselves)
2) Are you able to attract serious business people to your opportunity as business builders? As far as I can see the next couple of years are giving us a huge window of opportunity to attract some of the big players from other industries who need to find another way to create income.
(These captains of industry are likely to be looking for an innovative product, a company that is positioned for huge growth and a business model that they can operate from home with a laptop and the internet)
As one of my upline likes to say ‘I am not participating in the recession!’ Are you?
