Identifying and getting clear on your niche is by far one of the most confusing aspects of online marketing (or any marketing)
It’s not confusing if you know how to do it but it does cause a lot of confusion for those who don’t.
It is essential that you have a clear niche and know exactly who your ideal customer/ clients/ partners are.
If you don’t you won’t be able to reach them because:
a) you won’t know where they hang out
b) you won’t know what they want to hear
c) you won’t know what they want to buy
You can see how that can make it tricky to be successful so if you’ve not been hitting it right and are feeling like a bit of a failure, take heart.
No one is successful (for long) in online marketing without a clear niche or niches.
Once you have your broad niche I recommend that you niche that niche even further. Most people don’t do this because it takes some time for planning and some brain power. (Ouch!)
The problem with this is that what you save in time and brain power now, you will pay for later. You may waste a lot of time and money promoting your business to the wrong crowd.
Your message could be the greatest in the world, for the right target market, but if you’re talking to the wrong people they won’t even hear you. They’ll probably ignore you or worse not even notice your message. This is not a fun or profitable way to do business.
If you’re a home based or solo entrepreneur you MUST niche down your niche as much as you can. Here’s an example of how to do this:
You have done some keyword research, you have skills and experience in your field, Real Estate, and you decide you want to target Real Estate or Property Professionals.
That’s cool but it’s way too broad. So to have a clearer message and turn your business into a powerful online/offline marketing machine you need to zoom in closer.
Think about where you have special or expert knowledge so that can position yourself to become an expert.
Think about which type of Real Estate Professionals you most enjoy working with.
Look at how many searches there are on google for your options.
Let’s say you have an affinity with Real Estate Professionals who sell luxury properties in the XXX region. Now that is a niched niche!
Narrow it down as much as you can and test your market. Do the keyword research and ask your favourite clients exactly what information they are looking for.
It takes some time and planning but will make your business so much more effective, fun and profitable when you have a clarity on who your niche is.
It can seem like a lot to do on your own and it can be confusing. Don’t let that stop you moving forward.
