Never Give Up On Your Dreams!

I’ve been thinking about how easy it is to give up on your dreams and how important it is that you don’t!

Whatever type of business owner you are the chances are your goals require a lot of big vision thinking and planning into the future.

When we’re excited, just got back from a great event, just got a new client or just made a big break through it’s so easy to feel pumped and enthusiastic.

But what about those dark days? You know the ones … where you wake up feeling low and things just aren’t flowing or you have to deal with an awkward customer or you’re just plain worried about your cash flow.

It’s on those days that we all need to keep in mind on our big picture thinking and why we started our entrepreneurial venture or business in the first place.

I have seen so many people quit on their dreams since I started out on my own back in 2003. It’s just too sad and sometimes you can ‘save’ people by helping them get re-motivated but even then the only person that can really save you is you.

That’s why it’s so important to put in place systems and to develop habits for your life that will support you and keep you on track.

Here are some suggestions to help you get solid so that you last the course and don’t give up on your big dreams:

  • Set goals – I like to set big crazy goals as well as small very measurable goals that you can see in the not too distant future.  The big goals get you excited and are great for when you’re full on and on top of the world.

The little goals are easy to tick off and you can reward yourself very often for achieving these milestones. Always remember to reward yourself even if it’s just taking an hour in your favourite coffee shop and indulging yourself a little.

An example of a big goal for me was my dream of getting my new book published by a publisher. I already had books which I’d self published and that’s cool too but I dreamed of being a ‘published author’ since I was a wee little tot.

A small goal could be make a sale or get a new client this week. You see quick action and quick reward.

If I’d given up on my dreams (and I have had so much rejection and opportunity to throw the towel in over the last 9 years) I wouldn’t be seeing my big dream come true now.

Sometimes it just takes time so set those goals, evaluate your progress and re-adjust them in line with your plan as you go along. (Just don’t give up!)

  • Get the training you need. Don’t be cheap here. I see so many entrepreneurs and small business owners talking about their big dreams but they won’t invest in the training they need to achieve them.

Remember that everyone who succeeds has usually invested hundreds and thousands of hours and dollars to get to where they are now.

One way or another you need to invest. I recommend you invest in you (your greatest asset) both with time and money so that you can get the very best return and satisfaction from your career.

  • Work with a coach or mentor. If you’re fortunate enough to work in a business model where you have leadership mentoring then grab it with both and hands and find your mentor.

If you’re a solo entrepreneur get yourself a coach asap. Feedback is invaluable and if you try to do it all alone you will probably fail. (Sad but true)

Without my mentor I honestly don’t know where I would be.

  • Rest. Remember to take care of yourself because you will produce more when you do work. Also take to heart the sage words of Jim Rohn, wherever you are be there.

So when you work, work and when you rest, rest.

  • Fun.   Fun is the spice of life and if you’re all work and no play you’ll be a very dull peep! Make time for fun so that you enjoy each and every day of your life.  Otherwise what is it all for?

  • Exercise. Well you know how important this is and you’re either doing it or not. If you’re not then get to it. Money and business will not serve you well if you’re not balanced and healthy to enjoy it.  Find something you enjoy doing enough to do it regularly such as walking, dancing, tennis or swimming.  There’s always something –my favourite is fast country walking because I get the exercise and to clear my head from sitting at the computer so much.

  • Feed your soul. I favour meditating. It does take some discipline but even 10-15 minutes of quiet time in the morning will nourish you and set you up for the day.

  • Journaling is another good one. If you can focus to meditate try scrawling notes in your journal – this can really help you feel good and figure out what you need to do next.

  • Reading.  I very rarely go a day without reading a personal development book or listening to an inspiring audio. Start to do whatever works best for you and I promise it will change your life (and your attitude to it) very quickly.

  • Food, water and supplements. Some people have it all figured out with their business and playtime but somehow skip over this essential part of living a good life.

If you’re not looking after yourself there’s one thing that’s for sure. It won’t be long before the universe gives you a wake-up call and you have no choice but to start. Why wait? It’s so easy to eat a piece of fruit, take some supplements, drink some water and go for a walk.

So these are the things that have kept me sane whilst I’ve been going for my big dreams. I hope you can take something from this because if you even change one little thing that makes your life better I know I’m doing what I was put here to do.

Have fun and never give up on your dreams

Well said Rachel. Sometimes just hanging in there and taking small steps each day towards your dreams is all you need to help make your dreams a reality. Getting the balance right is so important especially if you work for yourself as there are no clear boundaries between when working starts and finishes. Love the picture by the way. Katina x
