John Maxwell – Put Your Dream to the Test, Book Review – Part 1

January 27th, 2010 rhenke Comments

Let’s make a deal ok? Unless I am really inspired by a book and within the first couple of chapters am feeling it, I won’t waste my time or yours reviewing it.

My hubby ordered this book and I wasn’t too sure whether I would be able to get into it. I have read another book by John C Maxwell about leadership, and although I enjoyed many pearls of wisdom on leadership I didn’t manage to finish the book.

That doesn’t happen often with me but I think it was because Maxwell’s leadership books tend to be geared up for employees, which just seems to turn me off.

So on to ‘Put Your Dream to the Test.’

I’ve read the first couple of chapters and love it. I think this is a great book for Network Marketers because so much of what we do on a daily basis needs to be fuelled by our dreams.

The book had me grabbing my journal and scrawling lots of goals, dreams and AHA’s down!

Are You Losing Sight of Your Dream?

No matter how long you’ve been in the business the odds are that in some form or another you’ve been encouraged to do some dream building. Am I right?

This book will help you to clarify your dreams and to get real clarity with your vision.

My Dream

I don’t know about you but I find that many Network Marketers come unstuck with dream building. When I started in the business my dream was to become a writer and at the time I was studying for my English Literature degree.

The new plan was to start this home business and make a $1000 per month which would pay some bills and tuition and enable me to stay home with my young daughters and continue studying. Urggghh no!

It didn’t work out quite like that. Me being me I bought the HUGE dream. I did all the stuff and after finishing that academic year I went full time in MLM. Or whatever full time is when you have young children! Whoo hoo (I soon learned the hard way)

In no time at all I found myself in the role of a weight loss coach. I mean how did that happen? I’d never weighed more than 53 kgs and helping people with their weight, although admirable was definitely not my dream.

It was simply the vehicle to achieve my dreams but I often forgot that along the way.

I did lots of dream building like a good student of the business and I set tons of goals.
What happened was somewhere along the way my Network Marketing success actually BECAME MY DREAM! Has that happened to you?

Competitive people fall into this trap easily. They become obsessed with cracking it and making it work.

That’s cool but we must hold on to our dreams or what is it all for?

Take the Dream Test

The first chapter is about discovering whether your dream is really YOUR DREAM. This is very helpful because sometimes we can be pursuing an old dream that is maybe not relevant to us anymore but we forgot to update it.

Also there are many people chasing the wrong dream and just trying to please other people.

Here are the first 3 of the 10 questions from the dream test:

1) The Ownership Question: Is my dream really my dream?
2) The Clarity Question: Do I clearly see my dream?
3) The Reality Question: Am I depending on factors within my control to achieve my dream?
(Tricky one!)

A good question to ask your self here would be, ‘Am I in the right vehicle to achieve my dream in a reasonable amount of time?’

It’s a multiple choice so if you need some more encouragement to go for it and dream a big dream this test is brilliant and you’ll really benefit from the book.

The chapters correspond to the 10 questions so you can focus on each one as you go through.

The book is full of inspirational real life stories and examples of people going after their dreams and achieving them. It’s a feel good book but also has you soul searching and doing practical exercises to help your with your dreaming.

There is also some good advice on protecting your dream and not falling prey to the dream stealers, who so often trip us up in MLM.

To finish up today, here’s a great quote from the book: ‘When the dream is right for the person and the person is right for the dream, the two cannot be separated from each other.’

I’ll be moving on to ‘The Reality Question,’ shortly so I’ll let you know how that goes next week!
